Breaking the Glass Ceiling; 1990-2005

The 1990s brought a whole new range of options in terms of what to do with their lives. We see a significant increase in the number of women joining the workforce and women joining fields that have historically been dominated by men. Women were given the right to put off pregnancy, with the birth control pill becoming more readily available for younger women. The film industry echoes these trends and portrays women as not only wives and mothers but also as successful career women. We see women as athletes, police officers, writers, and nurses breaking through the glass ceiling and finally being portrayed realistically. We also see our first nonwhite actress winning an Oscar. Not only are these women in the workforce, but they are also determined, strong-minded, and not taking shit from the men around them.
